Margaret walked into a nearly deserted pub, spying a cloaked, hooded figure waiting at a table in the back. Her heart leaped in excitement, and she rushed over to greet her love with an enthusiastic kiss.

“Good day to you too,” the cloaked one said, chuckling.

“I have missed you,” said Margaret.

“And I, you.”

They had just finished catching each other up on the goings-on in their lives when Margaret overheard something that made her blood freeze.

“…Lord Richard’s bastard… planning to ambush him in this task…”

Margaret jumped up from the table and hurtled out of the pub, her lover hot on her trail. “Caden is in danger!” she said, panicked. “We have to warn Rosalina, but it will take far too long to reach her.”

Her beloved took her by the hand, tugging her in the direction of the town’s stable and said, “Not if we take my horse.”

Caden was pacing in an alley, needing to think in peace without anyone staring at him oddly. So far, he’d collected a book, candle, needle, comb, glove, an ear of corn, and a map. He solved the mirror riddle but was still figuring out where to obtain one. All that was left to do was to solve the last clue, retrieve the corresponding item, find a mirror, and he would be done! If he could acquire both items in the same place, as had happened with the book and the comb, then he’d be set.

It turns once, what is out will not get in. It turns again, what is in will not get out.

He could not figure it out. It was by far the most challenging one and left him stumped.

What could it be?

Rosalina walked through her gardens, still cooling off from her argument with her mother. She knew she would be summoned to the throne room once participants began arriving, but she refused to go back inside before then. The sound of a galloping horse caught her attention, and she spotted Margaret riding on the back of a hooded figure’s horse heading towards her. The mystery man! Daise was finally going to present her beau. She smiled in anticipation, but the closer they got, the more Rosalina was overcome with a sense of foreboding. When she could see Margaret’s face clearly, she knew something was wrong.

“Rosalina!” Margaret yelled from atop the horse. Rosalina could hear the stress in her voice, and her heart sank.

“What has happened?” Rosalina demanded anxiously.

“Caden is to be ambushed!”

Rosalina’s eyes widened in shock before hardening. No. “I must aid him.”

“Your enemies are mine. My sword is yours,” said Margaret, leaving no room for discussion. The rider nodded once in agreement.

Rosalina eyed the rider in contemplation. “We will need cloaks.”

A key!

The answer to the riddle was a key, and he had one in his possession after pocketing the key used to open his locked bag. He was surprised that they were given such an advantage with two items but supposed they’d earned the reward for carrying that wretched rock around.
